While generative AI has spent three years attracting headlines, rattling creatives, and making enemies, a different category of AI has been quietly reshaping how people work and earning the trust of the industries it serves: assistive AI.

The distinction matters more than most coverage suggests. SAG-AFTRA's leadership has noted that after evaluating well over a hundred AI companies, the question they kept returning to wasn't what AI can do – it's whether it's designed to protect and empower the people it works alongside, or to replace them. That question drove the guild negotiations that have now concluded across Hollywood, and continues to shape how studios and technology companies approach AI adoption.

Flawless' Co-CEO Scott Mann recently explained the difference between assistive AI and generative AI in relation to film and TV. This distinction is covered below.

This article explains what assistive AI is, how it differs from generative AI, and where it's already being used – from film sets to hospital consulting rooms to everyday productivity software.

Assistive AI: A Clear Definition

Assistive AI is software designed to help people complete tasks more effectively without removing them from those tasks entirely.

Its defining characteristic is simple: the human remains the author, the creative lead, the decision-maker. The AI improves speed, precision, or accessibility. It does not replace the person using it.

The distinction shows up clearly in practice.

The work starts with a human. The AI makes it better. The human is still responsible for the result.

In each case, the human does the work that matters. The AI makes sure less gets in the way. Assistive AI occupies the space between two failure modes: no AI at all, which leaves industries and professions without tools that could genuinely serve them, and generative AI, which removes the human from the equation entirely.

Assistive AI, in contrast to other categories of the technology, is built for professionals working in environments where no compromises can be made. A film production cannot afford to compress color information and call it close enough. A medical diagnostic tool cannot round down on accuracy. An actor's likeness cannot be used without their consent. These are not edge cases but the baseline requirements of professional practice.

And assistive AI is designed to meet those requirements. Where generative AI asks professionals to accept synthetic approximations, assistive AI holds itself to the same standard the professional does.

Assistive AI is not a new idea. Every tool that has ever caught a typo, auto-completed a formula, or flagged an anomaly in a dataset was doing the same thing: extending human capability without replacing human judgment. The spell-checker did not write the sentence. The spreadsheet did not make the decision. The human did – faster, and with fewer errors, because the tool was there.

What has changed is the scale of what assistive AI can now do. Today's models are sophisticated enough to supplement creativity and decision-making across tasks that once required entirely human effort – not by taking over, but by going further into the work alongside the person doing it.

Assistive AI vs Generative AI: What's the Difference?

Assistive AI and generative AI are not two points on a spectrum – they have fundamentally different relationships to human authorship. One operates within an existing chain of creative ownership. The other introduces synthetic material that exists outside it.

Not all AI is the same. In filmmaking, this distinction is the foundation for how the industry should regulate, compensate for, and adopt AI.

Assistive AI starts with a human – a performance, a decision, a piece of writing, a design. The technology exists to translate, refine, or render that human work more accurately and efficiently. The human remains the author. The AI is the tool.

Generative AI starts with a model – and ends with a synthetic output. Material is machine-created, pulling artistry and identity from an underlying model, often via text prompt. It replaces human creative labor, threatens likeness rights and creative roles, and is typically trained on unlicensed data without full consent – producing outputs whose provenance is opaque or nonexistent, and which cannot be copyrighted. Text, images, voices, performances: all statistically derived from vast amounts of existing human work, often without the knowledge or consent of the people whose work trained it. The process begins and ends with the machine.

Assistive AI is already embedded in the workflows of filmmakers, doctors, teachers, and knowledge workers. These aren't pilot programmes or proof-of-concepts – they're live, in production, and improving outcomes today.

Let's dig into a one of these film use cases in more detail, to explore what makes it assistive AI.

Visual Dubbing – A director adjusts a line reading in post. The performer's lip movements are refined to match the newly recorded dialogue. The director and writer consent under DGA/WGA agreements; the performance remains the actor's. When a film needs dialogue changed after everything has already been shot, visual dubbing allows the switch without returning to set. In 2025, Flawless achieved the world's first theatrical release of a visually translated feature film — bringing Swedish hit Watch the Skies to American audiences without subtitles, demonstrating the technology's ability to reach a global audience while preserving performance authenticity. Earlier, Playdate (starring Alan Ritchson, Isla Fisher, and Kevin James) used visual dubbing to switch out five lines of dialogue containing profanity. More broadly, visual dubbing can localize titles across territories, resulting in 2.6× higher completion rates on streaming platforms.

None of these examples involves the use of fully synthesized content. No performer was replaced. No scene was generated from a text prompt. No DP was cut out of the creative process. The distinction matters because the output in each case is copyrightable and owned by the studio – which is precisely what generative AI cannot offer.

Generative AI applications in film follow a different logic entirely – and the risks are categorically different. Synthetic performers deliver AI-generated performances that were never captured on set, with no real performer involved: likeness, labor, and human artistry are replaced entirely. AI-written scripts shift creative authorship from human to machine. Prompt-generated scenes – sets, lighting, costumes produced from text descriptions – eliminate the contribution of the DP, production designer, and lighting director. These capabilities exist today. Without governance infrastructure, nothing stops them from entering guild-regulated productions.

Healthcare

In healthcare, diagnostic AI tools now help radiologists detect anomalies in scans that might be missed in a manual review – not by replacing the clinician's judgement, but by making sure nothing escapes it. AI-powered prosthetics that respond to nerve signals give amputees finer motor control than was possible a decade ago. Augmentative communication devices allow people who have lost the ability to speak – through ALS, stroke, or injury – to communicate in something close to their own voice. In every case, the technology serves human intent rather than supplanting it.

Education

For a student with dyslexia, a reading assistance tool can be the difference between accessing a curriculum and being excluded from it. For a student with hearing impairment, real-time captioning can mean full participation in a classroom for the first time. Adaptive tutoring systems adjust pace, difficulty, and approach based on how an individual student is actually learning – something a teacher managing thirty students at once cannot always do alone. The teacher remains central. The AI removes the barriers that get in the way.

The Workplace

Meeting transcription tools, AI note-takers, and predictive text have quietly become some of the most widely used assistive AI tools in existence – often without people even registering them as AI. For workers with disabilities, the accessibility features built into productivity software have fundamentally changed what's possible in a professional environment. For everyone else, they compress the mechanical overhead of knowledge work – the note-taking, the summarizing, the scheduling – so that attention can go where it actually matters.

In Film, Where Is Assistive AI Headed?

Assistive AI is a continuation of something professional industries have been doing for decades: adopting technology that improves craft, reduces mechanical labour, and keeps human skill at the centre of the work. Each generation of tooling – from optical compositing to digital rendering to ML-assisted VFX pipelines – has made skilled practitioners more capable.

The next wave will be more sophisticated, more embedded, and more consequential for how value is distributed. Tools capable of analyzing, rendering, and extending creative work challenge long-standing notions of ownership, authorship, and fair compensation.

Assistive AI, by definition, operates within an existing chain of authorship. The human creates; the tool serves. That clarity matters not just philosophically but economically – because it determines who owns the output, who gets paid, and who gets protected. Rights lineage that is traceable, auditable, and licensable is not a nice-to-have: it is the condition under which creative industries can adopt AI without dismantling the structures that protect the people who work in them.

All creative value originates with people. AI does not invent culture – it operates on, learns from, and extends human work. One open question is whether the industry can hold a clear line between assistive and generative use – and build the governance infrastructure to enforce it. Without that infrastructure, nothing prevents generative AI capabilities from entering guild-regulated productions, regardless of what any contract says.

That requires a pragmatic path forward – one that embraces innovation without abandoning human authorship, preserves clear distinctions between assistive and generative use, and ensures that no performer's likeness is used without their consent.

Most fundamentally, it means building the structures that guarantee the value AI generates from accumulated human creativity flows back to the people who made that creativity possible. The industries that do that will emerge from this period stronger. The ones that don't will find the conversation has moved on without them.

What is the difference between assistive AI and autonomous AI?

Assistive AI operates under direct human supervision – it acts when a person asks it to, on material a person provides, toward an outcome a person defines. Autonomous AI agents operate independently, making decisions and taking actions without requiring human input at each step. Is assistive AI bad for the environment?

In most contexts, assistive AI compares favourably to the alternative — and in film production, the difference can be significant. Every day of reshoots means crew travel, location logistics, equipment, catering, and energy use across every department. Assistive AI tools that allow filmmakers to fix dialogue, adjust a performance, or correct a visual element in post-production eliminate that footprint entirely. For an industry under growing pressure to reduce its carbon impact, that is a meaningful and frequently overlooked advantage.

The energy cost of running AI models is real, but it is modest compared to the emissions of the physical production it replaces. A render on a server is not the same as flying a cast and crew back to a location. Assistive AI, used well, is not just a creative and economic tool — it is a more sustainable way to make film.

I'll be honest with you. When Scott and Nick first walked me through the AI filmmaking platform Flawless was building, I thought they were a little crazy.

Thirty-plus models. Clean data. A massive team of scientists, filmmakers, and engineers. A process that was expensive and painstaking. An obsessive attention to cinematic-quality output and bank-level data security.

I've spent my career building and scaling technology companies, and I know what investors want to hear. This wasn't it.

It was 2023. OpenAI had just launched ChatGPT to a stunned world. TechCrunch was running headlines like "VCs continue to pour dollars into generative AI." Every investor in the valley was chasing the same bet, and the prevailing belief – loud, confident, and mostly wrong – was that you'd eventually just prompt a movie. Type a few lines, hit generate, collect your Oscar. Against that backdrop, what Nick and Scott were building looked stubborn at best.

But the more time I spent with them, the more I understood: they weren't being stubborn. They could see what others missed. They knew that great film and television isn't a pattern to be optimized. It's crafted by artists making thousands of creative decisions under pressure. They knew you could never remove the human from that process and expect anything worth watching to come out the other side. They were doing AI right.

How it began

I started as an advisor, then joined the board – and the more time went by, the more involved I got.

I watched Scott, Nick and the team build tools that filmmakers actually wanted to use – not because they had no choice, but because the outputs were good enough for the most demanding creative work on the planet.

I watched them sit down with SAG-AFTRA and other guilds and treat them not as adversaries to be managed, but as partners to be earned.

And I watched Nick and Scott turn down shortcuts that most companies would have jumped on.

Two years later, I'm all in.

The distinction that matters

What drew me here – and what I believe this industry needs to hear clearly right now – is a distinction that I think gets lost in all the noise around AI: the difference between technology that replaces human creativity and technology that amplifies it.

At a recent conference with the Advanced Imaging Society – a group of top tech leaders from across the entertainment industry we were invited to join – someone used a phrase that stopped us all in our tracks: assistive AI.

It landed because it named exactly what we'd been trying to build and struggling to articulate.

Generative AI produces synthetic outputs, trained on material that artists never consented to. It doesn't create from nothing – it samples, synthesizes, and reproduces the trillions of dollars of studio investment and the performances of millions of credited artists who agreed to work on specific projects, not to fuel a model. That's not creativity. That's theft. And we're already seeing the sheen come off – the lawsuits are mounting, and the huge VC bets on generative AI products are quietly unwinding. The tools gaining ground now are the quiet ones – built to serve creativity without harming it.

But I also spent enough time early in my career at Universal Pictures to understand something that pure technologists sometimes miss: this industry runs on trust, on craft, on relationships built over decades. You can't shortcut your way into this world. You earn it, or you don't get in.

The films and shows that move people – that actually get made, distributed, and remembered – are the result of thousands of creative decisions, technical judgements, and collaborative relationships. That doesn't come from a model. It comes from people who have spent careers developing taste, craft, and the ability to work with other talented people under pressure.

What technology can do is give those people better tools.

Why this moment matters

What excites me most about this moment in AI filmmaking – and I mean genuinely, not in a press release way – is the possibility on the other side of getting this right.

Film and television have been contracting. Fewer productions, tighter budgets, more constraints on the creative people who make the work everyone actually wants to watch.

If we do this well, assistive AI doesn't just improve a workflow here and there. It changes the economics of the whole thing. More stories get made. More of them reach global audiences. Filmmakers who couldn’t get projects financed at today’s costs will find a path. Productions that would never have crossed language barriers now can.

We believe these are the conditions for a renaissance in global filmmaking. And that it’s closer than most people think.

How Playdate Secured a PG-13 Using DeepEditor™

Playdate, an action comedy starring Isla Fisher and Kevin James, used Flawless’ DeepEditor to seamlessly replace five profane lines late in post-production – securing a PG-13 rating without reshoots, creative compromise, or losing the film’s comedic edge.

It’s late in the day as Isla Fisher and Kevin James step into a park to shoot a scene for Playdate, an action comedy that would later debut at #1 on Prime Video.

The day in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has already been a marathon: a lacrosse game, parking lot sequence, shifting set ups.

And now an impending sunset. With the natural light quickly disappearing, the team would have to be pragmatic. Shoot wide and close simultaneously. Grab as many takes as possible.

What they didn’t clock in the rush was that they had not captured profanity-free “safe” takes.

Unbeknownst to the team during the shoot, this park scene – along with several others – would later set the film on a path toward an MPA ‘R’ rating.

And that would cause problems with the movie's eventual distribution.

A Late-Stage Curveball

During test screenings, “it kind of became really clear that the studio wanted the movie to be PG-13”, recalls producer Jason Benoit, who we interviewed over Zoom in December 2025 following the film’s successful release.

For Jason, this wasn’t a surprise. The film was meant to be an edgy, laugh-out-loud comedy: a movie born from a mantra: “Are you having fun?” The kind of film he could watch with his kids and a reminder of why he fell in love with movies in the first place.

But with everything in the locked cut meticulously poured over, how would the team remove curse words and secure a PG-13 – without disturbing the tone, or voice of the director?

Because what was at stake went beyond the distribution: the creative vision of director Luke Greenfield – the renowned director with an instinct for blending heart, humor, and cinematic style with films like The Girl Next Door (2004) – was at stake, too.

“I think the director's vision and a movie's vision is really so important because the reason that you hire somebody or a particular somebody to come on to do a project is because they have a voice,” says Jason.

Changing anything about the film, at this stage, put the very essence of the film at risk.

Here’s Our Problem: We Don’t Have It

The team was in post in Los Angeles. As far as they saw it, four ideas of what to do: recut with different takes, edit out swearing lines or scenes, standard ADR, or reshoot.

Trawling back through the rushes, the editor looked at many different takes and performances. But the performances just didn’t have the same edge in other takes. And losing those moments altogether wouldn’t work, either; the sequencing, the editing and the performances were not holding together.

“They just didn't match up, not even closely, and in a way that either we had to cut the entire joke and beat or, it was really going to be less humorous, less organic,” says Jason. “The director had a creative vision. He liked certain performances. He wanted comedy in there, and those existed in the takes that he had picked that had the R-rated language in them.”

Nor was standard ADR an option. “We didn't want to jam ‘frick’, for instance, inside of a closeup of a mouth,” he says. “There's things you can do with ADR that can mask. There's things you can do with sound that can mask. But when you have lines on camera and close up, you are incredibly tied to what your solutions are.”

With the actors already scattered across other projects and countries, reshooting was out of the question. “The cost prohibitive aspect of that was too much and, let alone the logistics of it,” Jason says. The team was doing post in LA. The actors were on comedy tours, on the east coast, or, in one case, in Australia.

“None of the traditional options were really options for us,” Jason says “or at least ones that sort of, satisfied both parties, right?”

We Need To Fix These Five Lines

When the post team suggested using Flawless, Jason was immediately open to the idea, having seen our work on Fall, where 36 ‘f-bombs’ were removed. With the technology having continued to advance since that film, work began to create the necessary censorship edits.

To test new, safe lines of dialogue, the team recorded a few alternative, same-length lines. “When we first saw those, those initial tests that came back, you know, it's kind of mind blowing,” says Jason.

“What was really key for us was this ability to pre-visualize. And to see how it was going to work in multiple forms,” says Jason. “It was the ability to lock it in, but with more confidence than what a traditional VFX process would have allowed us to do.”

With the team confident it had found the solution, all that had to happen now was for the cast to record a few variations of ADR lines.

“We explained to [the cast] the problems that we had,” says Jason. The producers spent time talking with the cast to give the problem context: five lines were standing in between the film and the PG-13 rating it needed. “And I think as long as you’re communicating, you’re having everybody understand how this tool works and that it does maintain the fidelity of what the production really hopes for.”

The cast was also reassured by the fact that Flawless’ tools are never used to train its underlying models: their likeness, performances, voices would only be used to fix the specific, uploaded shot. “Alan [Ritchson] even said, look, it’d be great to be able to watch this movie with my kids,” says Jason.

With new lines of dialogue locked and recorded, John worked with Flawless to start iterating and creating options.

“The key for us was to try to make it feel as authentic and real as possible within the tone of these characters,” says Jason. “And so it really was kind of mind blowing to see that.”

“But was also even more mind blowing was the ability to say, ‘Okay, well, that's not quite perfect… let's try this line’. And that was so cool to know that you weren't restricted completely to one thing.”

Now, with newly-created visual dubs, the director was able “to maintain that pace, that rhythm that we landed on based on the audience feedback, based on what the movie was telling us.”

With the scenes no longer upended, Jason could lean back into the phrase that had guided him throughout: "Are we having fun?"

“There's a real clear line drawn between the work that Flawless did and the movie being a PG-13 movie versus R – that directly spoke to the success and the viewership of this film and opened up a four quadrant viewership.”

Playdate was released simultaneously in the US and in 45 other countries, including the UK, in November 2025.

“It allowed families to watch the movie together, and that, you know, I think directly supports the fact that this movie debuted number one in the world, in 46 different countries for Amazon. We were the number one not only movie but content that was on the platform. We were number one in the United States for two weeks or more,” he continued.

Flawless’ technology, in other words, did exactly what Jason and his team needed it to do. Director Luke Greenfield got to maintain the integrity of the scenes and comedy, something “which I know Luke was very happy with,” says Jason. And at the same time, Amazon secured the PG-13 rating it needed for distribution, making for a bigger hit on its platform.
